Welcome to the PIQ

(Projected Imagery Questionnaire)
Alec Figueroa, 2025

This questionnaire is designed to fulfill two main intentions:

  1. Attempt to gather a measurement on one's capacity to project imagery into their physical field of view.

  2. Help differentiate projected imagery from standard mental imagery.

This questionnaire is currently in ver. 1.0

Setting the Stage

In my years of working with individuals on mental imagery and aphantasia, a huge portion of that work has been dedicated to defining what we have now termed "Prophantasia".

Prophantasia describes the ability to "project" one's mental imagery into their physical field of view. It can be considered a form of intentional hallucination.

When one projects and image, the experience of that image will no longer be internal. Rather, it will occur as if it takes up physical space, not unlike a hologram, existing externally in one's environment when the eyes are open and existing in the black space in front of one's eyes when the eyes are closed.

This type of imagery has proven invaluable to define, since there inherently has been much confusion between the difference between mental imagery and projected imagery.

This survey aims to help make the distinction even clearer, and to finally begin gathering some data on different types of visual imaginers and their projection capabilities.

See the spectrum diagram below for a reference of what we're measuring here.

Important Note:

Out of the respective spectrums shown in the above image, the right side is what this survey is attempting to measure. â€‹Understanding the difference is imperative so we do not get data which is contaminated with the confusion between projected imagery and mind's eye imagery.

Instructions

There are two distinct phases to this questionnaire. Here's an overview of the phases:

  • Phase 1: You will proceed to watching an example video which can adequately simulate a proficient projected experience.

    • The objective of this phase is to set a precedent for what to expect from a projected imagery experience.

  • Phase 2: Attempting to project your own images.

    • The objective here is to follow the prompts on subjects to attempt to project.

    • The references start from very simple, and progress to very complex.

    • After each attempt, the survey will guide you through a reflection and recording process, using visual aides to measure the projected experience against.

      • It's important to note that the visual aides will not exactly match the experience of the user in some cases. Regardless, the participant will be instructed to select the rating which replicates their experience closest.

    • The objective here is to attempt to gather data on exactly what you experienced while attempting to project imagery.

  • For your reference: each section's score is calculated via a simple multiplier, since the target projects get more and more complex, the score multipliers are set to reflect that.

Rating Scale Information

Due to the nature of this ability, the rating scale will be provided after each scenario. The way to measure your ability is to pick the visual example that best represents your projected experience. Keep in mind, the visual representations will not be perfect, as it would be impossible to represent your exact experience. Remember to select the option that is closest to what what you experience.
